Potential changes may shake up popular Link Crew program

Rumors surround Clayton Valley Charter High School about Link Crew undergoing changes in the future.

Link Crew here at CVCHS is a program for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The program creates activities and lessons for incoming freshmen.

The program runs Week of Welcome to introduce the school and classes for incoming freshmen. They also run P.E Push Ins, where they give out a lesson and activities during freshmen P.E classes.

But there are rumours about changes in different areas of Link Crew.

If those changes happen, Sarah Lovick, who has been teaching Link Crew at CVCHS since 2013, won’t be able to continue leading the program. But she pointed out that some things won’t be changing with the program.

“So Week of Welcome is not changing,” Lovick said. “It is a four-day program. I’m running that. That Week of Welcome has no changes.”

One of the proposed changes involves the class and Lovick’s students.

“One of the changes that is happening is Link Crew will no longer be just on Thursdays. Link Crew will be a regular class,” Lovick stated. “This helps the students because now they can get a grade for it.”

When Link Crew was just one day a week, it affected students’ grade point average since GPA is divided by how many classes a student takes.

“So by having the class for four days a week, now we can give them a grade, and that will help their GPA,” Lovick said. “So it’s gonna meet four days a week. Like a normal class.”

Aryana Aleali, a junior who is a Link Crew commissioner, has been in the program for two years.

Aleali helps people at CVCHS understand what the changes may mean for Link Crew. But there are some things she wishes would not change.

“I definitely think we had a strong program before that there were no errors in, because we were so strong and like it was run so tightly,” Aleali said.

P.E. Push Ins are changing and it may affect the incoming freshmen because they won’t be able to experience the activities most students at CVCHS have.

“I definitely think that they will be missing out on a lot of things,” Aleali said. “P.E. Push Ins, like we talk about a lot of subjects that maybe in an English class, we can’t talk about. Or we have a lot of games and bonding opportunities that they won’t get if it’s changed.”

The proposed changes are not final, but Lovick explained what those changes may be.

“Two Link leaders would go into English classes to run mental health sessions once a month,” she said.

These proposed changes can impact the whole school if they become official.

“It is important to note, these changes are still under discussion with admin,” Lovick said. “The Link leaders, the P.E teachers, (and I) all hope that we are able to maintain our current class format.”
